Local Amenities

The village of El Portil is within about 10 minutes' walking distance or just a short drive away from the villa. There you will find a small supermarket to cater for your every day requriements, a pharmacy, a cash point machine and several cafes and restaurants, including Eddie's Surf Bar where you can have refreshing drink and check up on your emails, if you so wish.  Eddie's is also right on the beach at El Portil and so it makes a good place to visit to refresh yourselves after your time on the beach.  A doctor's clinic is also in El Portil, should you be unfortunate enough to need it during your holiday!

There are several really nice restauraunts on the road to El Rompido where you can sit and have your meal and look at the sea.   The Hotel AC Nuevo Portil Golf and the Cartaya Playa Hotel are situated within the Nuevo Portil Golf Complex and both offer fine restaurants and bars.  The Cartaya Playa is only open during the summer months, but spa facilities and use of the gym are available.

The fishing village of El Rompido is about a 10 minute drive away and here you will find a post office, a bank, more pharmacies, etc.  It is a thriving place which is expanding into an attractive tourist village.  There are a number of good restaurants facing onto the beach and a pedestrian precinct has recently been made where you can sit outside at one of the cafes and watch the world go by.  An English cafe will open in the summer of 2006 near to this precinct where you should be able to swap English books and also dvds.  El Rompido has a new marina and also boasts a very attractive and popular golf course if you want a change from the one at Nuevo Portil.    There is also a supermarket and several more touristy shops.

Slightly further afield, at Cartaya, there is a new Carrefour.  This is a huge supermarket which will provide you with everything you need for your holiday, from sun tan cream to water melons!

Near to Cartaya there is a gokart track and an adventure water park which are open during the high summer months.

Driving left from Nuevo Portil, you will find the nearby town of Punta Umbria and yet more gorgeous beaches.  These beaches are busier and more open to the Atlantic Ocean than our own beach at El Portil, thus making them a haven for wind-surfers and sail-surfers.  There is some sail-surfing on our own beach but as it is sheltered due to the estuary is is more of a family beach where children can swim safely.  However,  its quietness and safety features makes it an excellent place to learn to sail-surf and the English speaking staff at Eddie's will give you details of courses that are available locally.

Due to the excellent motorway link, Huelva is within easy reach of the villa, as is Seville with Portugal being only a one hour drive in the other direction.
